What to do when you're layed off
What happens to older women who have given their adult lives to a career, and then find themselves after 30 years forced into retirement? It wouldn't have been too bad, I say to myself, if the stock market hadn't plummeted and destroyed my 401(k). I thought, "Well, that's not the worst that could happen. I've got a few more years to work, so I can build it back up." The ecomonic down turn was crushing in the manufacturing business where I was employed. Actually the financial group that had bought our company a year or so previously had pretty much demolished our credibility in the marketplace. I think the worst part was to see the company I was so proud of go to the pits. What I've been able to put together for myself in the last few months is taking care of other peoples' pets and minding their houses when they travel. It won't make me rich, but at least I'm not a bag lady yet!

"The only disability in life is a bad attitude." ~Scott Hamilton
ReplyDeleteIt's your wonderful attitude that keeps you afloat, Vicky! You are an inspiration to all those who know you, and I'll bet as you continue to write your blog, you will become an inspiration to many who don't know you.
I can only hope that some light will shine for others like me. I've embarked on a pet and house sitting service that seems to be going good. Lots of referrals from friends and the web page is finally up. It may keep the wolf from the door as that seems to be what frightens most of us. If I get out of the "day" and think about the "what ifs" I just get crazy. I trust that God has given me the ability to if not the shovel to dig out of any hole I get thrown into. Keep smiling....
ReplyDeleteJust when I thought nothing could be worse than losing a job I found out my breast cancer had come back - If I hadn't had a problem breathing I never would have found out and would just have died, I guess. As it turned out the cancer was Stage IV and had mestasticized to the bone. The good news is that it's now 5 years later and I'm still surviving - oh, and I have full time job with an air line company and still pet sit for a select group of clients. Every day I realize what a gift I have in my life.
